The In-Home Couple Session: Cozy, Real and Totally You

Some of the most meaningful photos we take happen in a kitchen, not on a clifftop. An in-home couple session captures the two of you where your life actually happens, with your morning coffee, your terrible dance moves, your dog demanding attention and the light in your favourite window. If posing in public makes you nervous, or you want images that feel like a time capsule of this season of your life, this is for you.

Why choose an in-home session?

  • You relax faster. No strangers walking by and no worrying about the wind. Just your space.
  • The photos tell a story. Your first apartment, the house you just bought, the bookshelf you built together. These details matter more every year.
  • Weather does not matter. On the west coast that is a real perk. A rainy November afternoon can be the coziest backdrop of all.
  • Pets and little rituals fit in naturally. Your cat is not going to Dallas Road, but she can absolutely be in these photos.

How to prep your space

You do not need a magazine-ready home. We usually photograph two or three areas, so focus your energy there:

  1. Declutter the main spots. Clear countertops, tuck away cords, chargers and laundry, and hide the recycling. Leave the personal things that make it feel lived in, like plants, books, art and records.
  2. Make the bed with light, neutral bedding if the bedroom has good light. White or soft-toned linens reflect light beautifully.
  3. Open every curtain and blind and switch off overhead lights. Mixed-colour lighting can make skin tones look odd.
  4. Add a few fresh touches, such as flowers, a candle or a bowl of fruit on the table.

Light: it is all about the windows

Natural window light is what makes in-home photos glow. Large windows and lighter walls are ideal, but we can work with almost any space. We will usually schedule your session for when your best room gets soft, indirect light. That is often mid-morning or mid-afternoon, depending on which way the windows face. In the darker months we may plan around the brightest part of the day. A little candlelight or a string of warm lights can add atmosphere as evening falls.

Not sure which room is best? Send us a few phone photos of your space at different times of day, and we will help you decide.

Activities that make great photos

The secret to an in-home couple session is doing something real together. A few favourites:

  • Making coffee or breakfast, flour on noses optional.
  • Cooking a favourite meal and sharing a glass of wine at the counter.
  • Putting on a record and slow dancing in the living room.
  • Reading together on the couch under a blanket.
  • Playing with your pets. Dogs and cats are wonderful at breaking the ice.
  • Doing a puzzle, a board game or a houseplant repotting session. Honestly, anything you love.

We will give gentle prompts along the way, but mostly we will let you enjoy each other while we quietly capture what happens.

What to wear

Think elevated loungewear: what you would wear on a lovely lazy Sunday. Soft knit sweaters, oversized button-downs, comfy jeans, linen and cozy socks all work beautifully. Choose a palette of two or three neutral or muted tones and avoid big logos or busy patterns. Bare feet or socks feel natural at home. For more ideas, see our guide on what to wear for engagement photos.

What to expect on the day

A typical in-home couple session runs about one to two hours. We arrive, say hello to everyone (pets included), take a quick look at the light and chat about what you would like to do. We start with something easy, like coffee in the kitchen, and move through a couple of rooms as things relax. Many couples tell us they forget we are there after the first twenty minutes, and that is exactly when the best photos happen.

Want to add some outdoor time? We can finish with a short walk around your neighbourhood or a nearby beach at golden hour. Check the timing with our golden hour calculator.

Who an in-home session is perfect for

In-home sessions suit far more couples than you might think. They are a great fit if:

  • You feel shy in public, or the idea of strangers watching you pose makes you cringe.
  • You have just moved in together or bought your first home and want to remember it.
  • You are expecting a baby, or a big change is coming, and you want to record this chapter.
  • Your pets are family and you want them in the frame.
  • Your date falls in the rainy season and you would rather not plan around the forecast.

It is also a wonderful way to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. By the time you are standing at the altar, you will already know how we work and how easy it feels.

After your session

We hand-edit every gallery with a warm, natural look that stays true to your home's colours. Expect a private online gallery with plenty of images to download, share and print. A cozy morning at home makes a beautiful album, the kind of thing you will pull off the shelf on an anniversary years from now.

Frequently asked questions

Does my home need to be big or perfectly decorated?

Not at all. We only need a couple of spots with decent window light. Some of our favourite sessions have taken place in small apartments.

What if my home is dark?

We will schedule your session for the brightest part of the day and use the best window available. Warm lamps and candles can also add a lovely mood.

How long is an in-home couple session?

Most in-home sessions last about one to two hours, with an option to add a short outdoor walk at golden hour.

Can we include our pets?

Absolutely. Pets are welcome and often lead to the most genuine, joyful moments.
