Florence + Kyle: An Autumn Wedding in Victoria, BC

Autumn is one of our favourite seasons to be a Victoria BC wedding photographer, and Florence and Kyle's wedding is a big reason why. October in Victoria brings turning maples, cooler air and a lower sun that paints everything a little warmer. It is a season that rewards couples who are willing to slow down and enjoy it.

What makes autumn in Victoria special

By early October the city's street trees and gardens start to shift into amber, rust and gold. The sun sits lower in the sky all day, so even early afternoon light has a softness that midsummer never does. Sunset also comes much earlier than in June, so golden hour lands at a very guest-friendly time, often while people are still arriving for dinner.

Fall weather on the coast can change quickly, so we always plan a few covered options. A bit of cloud is welcome: overcast skies make colours glow and skin tones look beautiful.

How we approached the day

Florence and Kyle's day was about connection, so we treated it that way. We spent the getting-ready hours capturing details and the quiet nerves, then moved through the ceremony as unobtrusively as we could. For portraits, we gave gentle prompts and then stepped back, letting them talk, laugh and settle into each other.

We looked for places where the autumn colour could frame them: a tree line glowing behind them, fallen leaves underfoot, warm backlight catching the edge of the veil. Simple choices, but they make a gallery feel rooted in its season.

The people around them

Autumn weddings often feel especially warm because everyone gathers a little closer. We spend real time on guests: grandparents watching the vows, friends holding coats, the quiet hug between a parent and their kid before the ceremony. A complete gallery is not just portraits of the couple; it is a record of everyone who showed up for them.

Once evening comes, we work with the warm interior light, candles and string lights, adding gentle flash only when it is needed to keep the dance floor sharp and true to colour.

The editing palette

We edit for how a day felt, not for a trend. For an autumn wedding like this one, that meant:

  • Warm, honest skin tones that never tip into orange.
  • Rich but believable foliage. We let the reds and golds sing without pushing saturation until the leaves look plastic.
  • Soft contrast and gentle shadows, so the photos feel calm and timeless rather than punchy.
  • A handful of black-and-white frames for the most emotional moments, where colour would only distract.

The goal is a gallery that still looks right in twenty years, when trends have come and gone.

Tips for fall couples in Victoria

  • Check sunset times early. They move fast in autumn. Our golden hour calculator will show you exactly when to schedule portraits.
  • Layer up. A cozy knit, a jacket or a blanket adds texture and keeps you comfortable between shots.
  • Have a rain plan you actually like. A covered porch, a doorway or a big tree works wonders. See our rainy day photo tips.
