Few places near Victoria feel as storybook as Hatley Park, which is why Hatley Castle engagement photos are among the most requested sessions we photograph. The Edwardian castle, the sweeping lawns and the formal gardens make a romantic, slightly old-world backdrop. Esquimalt Lagoon, just down the hill, adds driftwood beaches and big skies. Here is how to make the most of it.
About Hatley Park
Hatley Park is a National Historic Site on the grounds of Royal Roads University in Colwood, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Victoria depending on traffic. The castle was built in the early 1900s for the Dunsmuir family. The surrounding estate includes manicured gardens, old-growth forest and views toward the water. You may recognize it from film and television, since it has appeared on screen many times.
Do you need a permit?
Professional photography at Hatley Park has typically required a photo permit and fee arranged in advance. Some areas or times may also be restricted for university events. Policies and fees change, so please check directly with Hatley Park before your session. If you book with us, we will help you sort out the logistics and plan around any closures.
Tip: Weekday sessions are usually quieter than weekends, especially in the gardens during spring bloom and summer.
Where to take photos on the grounds
The castle exterior
The stone facade, arched doorways and turret give you that unmistakable fairytale frame. We like using the architecture for a few wider, editorial portraits, then moving somewhere more intimate.
The Italian Garden
Symmetry, stone balustrades and seasonal planting make it feel classic and timeless, almost European.
The Japanese Garden
Ponds, little bridges, maples and soft, dappled shade. This is one of our favourite spots for close, quiet moments, and it is stunning in autumn.
The Rose Garden
In early summer the roses are in full colour and perfume. Come around golden hour for a warm, romantic glow.
Esquimalt Lagoon
Just below the estate, the lagoon gives you driftwood, a long gravel spit and open sky. Pairing the castle with a lagoon stop at sunset gives you two very different looks in one session.

The best seasons for Hatley Castle engagement photos
- Spring: Blossoms, fresh greens and tulips. Showers are common, so build in some flexibility.
- Summer: Lush gardens, roses and long evenings. Golden hour falls late, so plan an evening session.
- Autumn: Our personal favourite. The Japanese maples and the trees along the lawns turn gold, amber and crimson, and the low sun makes everything glow. We have photographed autumn engagement sessions here with scarves, cozy blankets and the leaves crunching underfoot, and they are always a joy.
- Winter: Quiet and moody, with bare branches and soft grey light. It suits couples who love a timeless, editorial feel.
Light matters as much as the season. The hour or so before sunset gives the warmest, most flattering light on the castle stone. Check your date in our golden hour calculator.
What to wear
The setting is elegant, so it rewards a little polish without needing a ballgown, although we would never stop you. Some ideas:
- Flowing dresses or skirts that move when you walk or twirl.
- Rich, earthy colours in autumn, such as burgundy, rust, forest green and cream. They look beautiful against the stone and leaves.
- Textures like knits, wool coats and denim jackets for a relaxed, layered look.
- Comfortable shoes for walking between garden areas. Bring the dressy pair along for portraits.

A sample Hatley Park session plan
Most of our Hatley Castle engagement photos sessions run about 90 minutes. Here is a flow that works well in early autumn, when sunset lands around 7 pm:
- 5:15 pm: Meet in the parking area, say hello and take a slow walk toward the castle while you warm up in front of the camera.
- 5:30 pm: Wide portraits at the castle facade, then some quieter frames under the trees along the lawn.
- 6:00 pm: The Japanese Garden for close, intimate portraits in soft, dappled light.
- 6:25 pm: A quick outfit change in the car if you have brought a second look.
- 6:40 pm: Drive down to Esquimalt Lagoon for golden hour and sunset by the water.
Running a little late or caught in a shower? No problem. The castle's covered entrances and the big trees give us shelter, and overcast light is wonderfully soft on skin. Our rainy day photo tips apply to engagement sessions too.
What to bring
- A blanket or quilt to sit on, which is also great for cuddling under on cool evenings.
- A small touch-up kit: lip balm, a comb, tissues and a hair tie.
- Water, and a snack if your session runs past dinner time.
- Your ring, cleaned and sparkling. We always take a few detail shots.
- Something meaningful, such as the book you both love, a thermos of tea or your pup's favourite toy.
How our sessions feel
Grand settings can make people feel like they need to perform. We do the opposite. We will give you simple prompts, like walking, whispering something ridiculous, or slow dancing on the lawn, so the photos look like you on a good day rather than a catalogue. Bring something personal too: a picnic, a dog (check pet rules first), your favourite coffee order or a playful sign announcing the news.
