13 Wedding Venues in Victoria BC That Photograph Beautifully

When couples ask us about the wedding venues Victoria BC has to offer, we tell them it is a happy problem. Within a short drive you have heritage castles, world-famous gardens, harbour-front hotels, orchards and wild Pacific coastline. As photographers, we think about venues a little differently: where is the light, where can we step away for portraits, and what is the plan if it rains? Here are our favourites, with a photo tip for each.

Availability, fees, packages and ceremony rules change. Always confirm the details directly with each venue or managing authority before booking.

Castles and heritage settings

1. Hatley Castle and Hatley Park (Colwood)

The Edwardian castle on the Royal Roads University grounds is one of the most recognisable wedding backdrops on the island. Formal gardens, stone walls, old trees and a view toward the lagoon give us huge variety in a short walk. Light tip: the gardens are best late in the day, when the sun drops behind the trees and the stone turns warm.

2. Craigdarroch Castle (Rockland)

A Victorian-era mansion with dramatic stained glass, carved wood and a grand staircase. Even when it isn't your venue, it can be a striking portrait stop; check with the castle about ceremony and photography arrangements. Light tip: interiors are moody, so bring patience and let us use window light rather than flash.

3. Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse (Colwood)

A Parks Canada national historic site with a red-and-white lighthouse, old fortifications and ocean views toward the Olympic Mountains. Permits are managed through Parks Canada. Light tip: evening gives you warm side light on the lighthouse and calmer water.

Gardens

4. The Butchart Gardens (Brentwood Bay)

Famous for good reason: the Sunken Garden, Rose Garden and Japanese Garden give endless colour through spring and summer. Light tip: the Sunken Garden sits in shade earlier than you'd expect, which makes for soft, even portraits on bright days.

5. Abkhazi Garden (Oak Bay area)

A small, intimate garden with rocky outcrops, Garry oaks, rhododendrons and a reflecting pond. Perfect for smaller weddings who want something that feels personal. Light tip: spring bloom season is spectacular; overcast days make the greens rich.

6. Beacon Hill Park (James Bay)

A large city park beside Dallas Road with ponds, meadows and ocean bluffs. Ceremonies in city parks generally need a City of Victoria permit. Light tip: head to the bluffs for sunset and wind-blown veils over the Juan de Fuca Strait.

Hotels and harbour views

7. Fairmont Empress (Inner Harbour)

Ivy-covered grandeur right on the harbour, with elegant ballrooms and the legislature and harbour steps a short walk away. Light tip: after dark, the Parliament Buildings light up, which makes for a magical night portrait.

8. Inn at Laurel Point (Inner Harbour)

Clean, modern lines and big harbour views, with a calm Japanese-inspired garden. Great for couples who want something contemporary. Light tip: big windows give gorgeous natural light for getting-ready photos.

9. Brentwood Bay Resort (Saanich Peninsula)

A waterfront resort on a sheltered inlet, with docks, boats and forested hills across the water. Light tip: the inlet is often glassy in the evening, perfect for reflection shots.

Wineries, orchards and farms

10. Church & State Wines (Saanich Peninsula)

Vineyard rows, modern architecture and open sky. Light tip: late summer evenings between the vines are pure gold.

11. Merridale Cidery & Distillery (Cobble Hill)

A relaxed orchard setting in the Cowichan Valley, about an hour north of Victoria. Apple blossoms in spring, full trees in late summer. Light tip: backlight through the orchard rows for that hazy, dreamy look.

12. Olympic View Golf Club (Langford)

Rolling greens, waterfalls and mountain views, with a classic clubhouse reception. Light tip: the open fairways are ideal for wide sunset portraits.

Wild coast

13. Aylard Farm, East Sooke Regional Park

For couples who want forest, meadow and ocean in one place. It is a park, not a venue, so plan for simplicity and confirm permit requirements with CRD Regional Parks. Read our full Aylard Farm wedding photo guide and Kasha and Justin's rainy Aylard Farm elopement.

Questions to ask any venue

Before you sign, ask a few questions that make a real difference to your photos:

  • Where would the ceremony move if it rains, and what does that space look like in natural light?
  • Are there restrictions on photography, flash or where the photographer can stand during the ceremony?
  • Is there a quiet spot near the reception for portraits during golden hour?
  • What time do you need to be out, and does that leave room for sunset photos?
  • Do any areas of the grounds need a separate permit or fee for photos?

Our list of questions to ask your wedding photographer pairs nicely with this one.

How to choose

Think about the season, your guest count and your rain plan first, then about light. Use our golden hour calculator to see when sunset falls on your date. Not sure where to start? Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular wedding venue in Victoria BC?

Hatley Castle, The Butchart Gardens and the Fairmont Empress are among the best known, but "best" depends on your guest count, season and style. Smaller couples often love Abkhazi Garden or a park ceremony.

Do I need a permit to get married in a park near Victoria?

Often, yes. City parks, CRD Regional Parks and Parks Canada sites each have their own rules for ceremonies and professional photography. Confirm current requirements directly with the managing authority before booking.

When is the best time of year for a Victoria wedding?

Late spring through early autumn is the most popular, with long evenings and gardens in bloom. Autumn brings warm colour and earlier, guest-friendly golden hours, and winter weddings can be wonderfully moody and cozy.

Which Victoria venues work best if it rains?

Hotels such as the Fairmont Empress and Inn at Laurel Point, and venues with covered spaces, make rain easy. For outdoor sites, plan a covered backup and bring clear umbrellas.
